Below supplied by the club's Past President Frank Wemple
Subject: 1906 San Francisco
So here it is!! Just a mere 104 years ago.
Watch this film clip. It is from 1906, downtown San Francisco , made 4 days before the great earthquake destroyed the city. It is filmed from the front of a cable car, heading east toward the ferry terminal building, which is the tower in the background (which survived the quake and still stands today). Look at the enormous old cars--this was and is a center of great wealth, and notice that they had a couple of idiot drivers back then, just as we have today.Towards the end of the film one reckless driver nearly gets run over by the cable car. You will see street cars, cable cars, horse-drawn wagons, and some huge, expensive, early motor cars. You will see jay-walkers, U-turns, few women and lots of convertibles.. Most of the buildings in the film would be destroyed or burned four days later. Knowi ng what we know about history, it is an eerie sight.
Watch life as it was over a hundred years ago in San Francisco . It's obvious that some people noticed the camera mounted on the street car. The music really adds to the footage also. It all makes for some really great viewing. Enjoy!
Here is a San Francisco film clip taken from a streetcar traveling down Market
Street in San Francisco in 1906, a few days before the earthquake/fire destroyed the area. It may take a little time to download,

Some info about the film:
This film was originally thought to be from 1905 until David Kiehn, with the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum , figured out exactly when it was shot. He got his clues from New York trade papers announcing the film showing, the wet streets from recent heavy rainfall, the shadows indicating time of year, and the actual weather and conditions on historical record. He even determined when the cars were registered, who owned them, and when the plates were issued. It was filmed only four days before the quake and shipped by train to NY for processing.
The (added) background music is "La Femme D'Argent " from the
"Moon Safari" album by Air.

Just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know about McPherson College's car show in May. A lot of folks in the club have helping me with the school's 12B, so I thought I'd alert everyone about a chance to take a closer look. It won't be finished by May of course, and it will likely be the only Franklin there, but hopefully it will be more than a pile of parts by then! I realize it's a bit of a short notice, but all are welcome and I'd love to finally meet some Franklin folks face to face! Attached are pdf files for the flyers. Every year a group in New York called "Cruisinbuddies" hold a car show in Binghamton, NY. They have always requested Franklins for the show but we never have had a way to let our members know the show will be coming up. Below is the flyer they sent us.
