Beware of Internet Scams

Franklin Club members have received a number of phony responses to their ads, particularly from the UK. Be careful to make sure that the seller is legitimate before sending money to anyone.

Question: I placed an ad in the Service Station that was also posted on the Internet. Yesterday I received an email from a gentleman from the UK. His name is XXXXXXXX. Here is what he had to say: "Thank you so much for your mail. I would be asking a 200GBP for the requested part and i can ship via ups on a next day delivery. The parts are in a good working condition. Whats your shipping address?

First: Do you know of this person? He was not listed in the 2007 Franklin roster I am asking for the Franklin grille script, a Tilt-Ray headlight lens, hood door springs, and a free wheeling unit. I am not sure what he means by good working condition since the only part that could be described like that is the free wheeling unit. 200GBP equates to $290 US dollars. I'm probably naive but I wasn't expecting to pay this much. I would be very interested in what you think.

Answer: It's amazing how a request you can make with a few keystrokes can reach people all over the world. Perhaps someone in a far away place, such as England, does have just the parts you need and how lucky that you and he can get together to help each other out. It happens every day. At the same time, a simple request can also reach many more people who wish to take advantage and sadly, it can be difficult to tell the difference. I really prefer not to mistrust anyone, just to be thorough in my dealings to avoid problems that are difficult to solve over such long distances. My feeling is that someone who has the capability to surf the web and find your request also has the capability to send a digital snapshot of the parts. If he can do that, it will be easier for you to determine if what he has will fit your needs.

If so, I prefer to learn a bit more about a seller before committing funds overseas. Address? Where did the parts come from? Does his email address end in .UK ? to show it came from England? As far as cost, shipping a free wheeling unit next day delivery from the UK would exceed the cost he quoted you, so I suspect there might be some confusion on his part as to what he actually would ship you. A digital photo would be a required 1st step before continuing, in my book.

1931 Franklin Series 153 Town Car January 4, 2010
1931 Franklin Series 153 Town Car (serial #53-204634L32) and engine (#152704). There is some question as to whether the car was manufactured at the factory as a town car or was converted after the fact into a town car. My best guess is that it was converted into a town car a number of years ago as it is listed in the Roster as a sedan, so I would assume someone converted it into a town car years ago. Particulars on the car are as follows:

  1. The drive train is fully restored - engine, transmission, rearend, etc. The engine was done by Joe Gerola, a deceased member of the club who was a mechanic. Joe also restored other Franklin engines. The engine runs incredibly well.
  2. Bodywork is entirely done.
  3. The wire wheels are recently powder coated. The tires are fair.
  4. The car has been entirely rewired.
  5. There is new glass that has not been installed.
  6. The chrome is almost completely done. Much of it is still packed up in boxes.
  7. There are some extras on the car, such as dual rear taillights and the splash guard over the hood front.
  8. THE CAR IS COMPLETE WITH ALL PARTS - rear tail lights, front lights, hubcaps, etc. To my knowledge nothing is missing.
  9. The car has wire wheels with dual side mounts.

What needs to be done is as follows:

  1. Paint. The car has been partially painted - fenders, splash aprons, rear cowl, etc. I have some paint for the car, but it would need to be totally repainted.
  2. Upholstery. I have the original front seat back. The rear cushions and front seat cushion are in the car.
  3. Install the glass.
  4. Finish the divider window or redo it in a different way.
  5. Top, carpet, headliner.

This is a very solid car that has always been keep in dry storage. In some ways I wish I could keep it, but in order to keep my wife semi-happy, I need to sell it. I have too many projects and too many Franklins. I have owned the car for about 2 years and purchased it as a part of a 2-car deal. Asking $19,500 but I will entertain reasonable offers. Lee Webb, email is preferable at Leland.Webb@gmail.com or 661 599 1670 (cell) or 661 833 1440 (home). Arrangements for delivery might be possible. The car is in Bakersfield, CA.

I am not sure of price, but believe he will offer it at a reasonable price. Call Norm Miller 563-320-2096

1926 - Series 11-A, 4-door sedan October 13, 2009
1926 - Series 11-A, 4-door sedan. The car belonged to my father Leonard Schettl and it ran good before being parked in dry storage some 27 years ago. The car was appraised by Auto Appraisal Group, Inc. for $12,000. The exterior was described as an older repaint with normal wear on the interior. I am asking the appraisal price. The car is located in Milwaukee and our family would like for the car to remain in the Franklin club. Mary Vitrano 414-581-5196.

1930 Series 145 Franklin March 21, 2009
We have a 1930 Franklin for sale. It is a 145 Series, (125" wheel base), and is a 4 door sedan. It has an air cooled motor that runs. The vehicle is complete except for the wood top and a horn button. All of the wood, top and interior will need to be replaced it has rotted. The seats are there, windows and lights are there and none broken. We bought this vehicle as a project to rebuild and now will not be able to do that. We are asking $10,000 for this car. We researched the web and found many prices but the lower prices all had missing parts and some had many missing parts, this car has no missing parts or pieces of the car. Both seats are there but will need re-built or at least recovered. We have the old top so you would have a pattern to follow.

REPRODUCED PARTS for a 1929, series 13, 135 sedan.
THROTTLE: Lost wax casting in bronze from original zinc die cast part. Finished and nickel plated; ready to drop in. Excellent fit. $180.00 Plus $10.00 for packing, postage, and insurance.

GRILL CAP: Lost wax casting in bronze from original zinc die cast part. Finished and chrome plated over nickel plating. Note it is the one with the Herringbone decoration around the perimeter and measures 3 1/2" in diameter. Shrinkage is less than 1/16" diameter from the original pot metal piece. Some very, very small pits hardly seen at arms length. Special attention to herringbone detail so to duplicate original as accurately as possible. On underside one can see the original factory number in the fine detail and the stud has been drilled and tapped to 5/16th x 18, square and straight to the piece. $400.00 Plus $10.00 for packing, postage, and insurance

These prices reflect cost only and no profit is realized. Plaster molds, rubber molds, casting, finishing to auto quality plating adds up fast, but I was very pleased with the results. These parts will be at the 2008 Trek

DECALS FOR DASH AND CIGAR SET - Looks just the ones Franklin manufactured. This picture shows a green color which is really reproduced as the original gold very well in the decal itself.

These decals were made on a 1.3 million dollar Heidelberg Press which handles the difficult job of printing metalic gold ink Price is $30.00 for complete set of 3 decals plus one extra one free for experimentation or marking alignment on dash. This will also give you insurance against any problem you might have. Decals will take clear finish without running the ink. These are not water decals but rather high quality prints on sticky material. Looks even better than originals at all viewing angles. Dick guarantees you will be pleased or return the decals for a full refund. Decals would look fine as final touch without any clear coat over them also. Write, call or e-mail Richard M.
